As a graphic designer, I found myself to be in need of a visual identity system that resonates with me while also subtlely showcase my creative approach.
The goal was to find something that I can stand behind and love. I created 30 logo sketches, experimented using both my ethnic name “Ha Le” and my nick name at GMU “Jessie Le”.
I also explored the different meanings and imagery that are linked to my identity, like water/river, the apple pen, my love for comic, etc. Eventually, I decided to go with the option that explored a fun back story of my name, where one time, a service worker called my ethnic name a bit too fast and it sounds like he was laughing. This story also inspired my smiling logo and the tagline which is “Design with a smile”.

Brainstorming sketches (I go by both Ha Le and Jessie Le), option 28 was chosen. I came up with the idea of a smiley logo based on a running joke about my name, which is sometimes, service workers would call out my name continuously a bit too fast and it would sounds like they're laughing.
